Vikram Rathour, Team India’s batting coach, reckons that Rohit Sharma, on his day, can be the best batsman in the world. Rathour’s words can be comprehended from the fact that Rohit has three ODI double centuries to his name along with four T20I tons. He also has the highest individual ODI score of 264 against Sri Lanka and the joint-fastest T20I century against the same opponent.
Rathour, who replaced Sanjay Bangar as India’s batting coach, feels that Rohit knows how to build an innings in the shorter formats. He also said that the Nagpur-born has gradually upped his game and has weaved magic in Test cricket as well.
“On his day, I think he is the best batsman in the world, especially in white-ball cricket. He has got great game-plans in white-ball cricket and that is being converted to Test cricket as well,” Rathour was quoted as saying in a live chat with Sportskeeda.
Rohit Sharma was a revelation in the home Tests against South Africa, says Rathour
Rathour mentioned that Rohit was a ‘revelation’ during India’s home Tests against South Africa last year. Prior to that series, Rohit’s position in the team wasn’t fixed. But after he scored a double century, opening the batting for the first time in the format, he grabbed the headlines.
“Unfortunately, in New Zealand, he got injured and couldn’t play the Test series but the kind of batting he did against South Africa in the last Test series we played in India, I think he was a revelation,” he stated.
Rathour was of the opinion that Rohit can tear any bowling apart without taking too much of a risk. He feels that Rohit is someone, who can play at a decent strike-rate, playing risk-free cricket.
“His strength is that he can take bowlers apart without taking any risk. He keeps on playing the cricketing shots, keeps backing his ability to hit straight. Without playing too many risky shots, he can still play at a phenomenal strike rate. So, that I think is his strength and on his day he can be the best player in the world,” Rathour added.
In 32 Tests, 224 ODIs and 108 T20Is, Rohit has notched 2,141, 9,115 and 2,773 runs respectively with 39 centuries and 74 half-centuries.
