OTD in 2010: Sachin Tendulkar became the first men's cricketer to score a double century in ODIs
Tendulkar ended the innings 200* off 147 balls.
There are plenty of records that Sachin Tendulkar has broken and created during his decorated 24-year career. He still remains the highest run-getter in international cricket with 34,357 runs to his name. However, one of the records that he created symbolised how international cricket had changed.
The record was created in the second ODI that took place at the Captain Roop Singh Stadium in Gwalior against South Africa on February 24, 2010. Though India managed to edge out a one-run win in the first game in Jaipur, there were still questions surrounding the team after the nervy win.
South Africa might have got the early wicket of Virender Sehwag in this match but they were yet to witness the brilliant strokeplay of Sachin Tendulkar. The God of Cricket made the otherwise strong bowling attack which included the likes of Dale Steyn, Jacques Kallis, and Charl Langeveldt look absolutely ordinary on the day and went on to score the first double-century in One Day internationals in men's cricket.
Tendulkar completed the milestone in just 147 deliveries and straightaway took the game away from South Africa despite the early wicket. The innings of Tendulkar included 25 boundaries and three big sixes with the runs scored at a phenomenal strike rate of 136.05. Tendulkar remained unbeaten as India put on a total of 401 in the end which is the highest total for the team against the Proteas and the seventh-highest total for India in the format. South Africa were bowled out for 248 in 42.5 overs and lost the game by 153 runs.
Other notable innings from the match
Though it was Tendulkar who stole the show there were other remarkable knocks surrounding him as well. It was Dinesh Karthik who supported the legendary batter with an impressive knock of 79 off 85 deliveries apart from his skipper MS Dhoni who scored a quickfire 68 off 35 deliveries which helped India get to the 400-plus total.
Speaking of the South African innings, no batter looked in control while chasing the mammoth total except for AB de Villiers who scored an unbeaten century, scoring 114 off 101 deliveries. He kept running out of partners as the Proteas suffered a massive defeat and lost the series.
