England’s premier fast bowler James Anderson is only seven wickets away from surpassing Glenn McGrath’s wickets tally and become the most successful fast bowler in Tests ever. The swing master is expected to achieve the feat in the upcoming two Tests against India. However, McGrath feels that once Anderson goes past him it will be almost impossible for any fast bowler to beat him.
A fast bowler’s career is shortlived nowadays considering the amount of cricket is being played. Moreover, the advent of T20 cricket and the leagues around the world will make it tough for a bowler to sustain in the longest format of the game. McGrath also pointed out the same fact and felt that Anderson will remain on top always and was also delighted that he is so close to crossing him.
“Once Jimmy goes past me it will be interesting to see where he wants to set the bar. With the nature of the game these days, and the amount of Twenty20 cricket, I believe no fast bowler will ever go past him. Being a fast bowler is the toughest job in the game and people do not see the hard work off the field that goes into spending as much time at the top as Jimmy has. We put ourselves through a lot more pain than anyone else,” he said while speaking to Daily Mail.
I have a lot of respect for him
Glenn McGrath ended his Test career with a whopping 563 wickets in 124 Test matches at an impeccable average of 21.64 and James Anderson has 557 scalps to his name. The former Australian bowler felt proud of his achievement and was happy that his record will be broken in the near future.
“I have an awful lot of respect for Jimmy. Good luck to him. I believe once he goes past me he will never be beaten. Records are nice and I’ve been very proud to have taken more wickets than any fast bowler in Test history, but any high is there to be beaten and I will be equally proud of Jimmy when he goes past me because the fast bowlers’ union has to stick together, whichever country we come from,” he further said.
