3) David Warner – Shuffling batting order throughout the season
The Sunrisers Hyderabad will be high on confidence after their complete performances against Delhi Capitals and Royal Challengers Bangalore. The back-to-back wins have taken them to the fourth position in the points table. For them, the equation is simple as they have to win their remaining fixture against Mumbai Indians, but it will not be an easy task as they are in red-hot form. Hence, it can be said that their playoff hopes lie in their own hands.
The Orange Army has reached this point owing to its inconsistency. And it has also been fuelled by some mind-numbing decisions by the skipper and the team management. The foremost one is the extensive focus on the team’s persistent middle-order flaws. Such has been the concern that to fix it this year they have been applying the trial-and-error method on a loop. By doing so, they have shuffled their batting unit like a pack of cards.
To be exact, there has been only one instance when their top five batsmen have batted at the same position in two consecutive games. From that, it is clear that time and again they have changed the roles of batsmen without thinking about its consequences. In one of the games, even David Warner tried his hands in the middle-order. The only batsman who has not been pushed up and down the order is Jonny Bairstow. As a senior player, Warner should have opted for a different approach, but he went along with the team management, a blunder which could have been avoided.
