Fortunes and momentum took giant, wild swings when two World Cup-winning captains and their sides rammed into each other. In one six-hitting mayhem at Mumbai, 18 runs differentiated Chennai Super Kings and Kolkata Knight Riders.

Perhaps, if this was a game of boxing, Kolkata Knight Riders were that boxer who took brutal blows and punches unstoppably in the face. With a bloodied mouth and blurry vision, a bout of insanity, a sudden gush of some unknown force, renewed will, and magical power got them to rise again and pulp their adversary with the same ruthlessness.

But in the end, one sucker punch and Knock Out. That is all that body could have possibly withstood. Down, sunk, and fallen flat in the ring with partial consciousness. They lost the fight but displayed some incredible courage to even believe that they can do it. What are the odds for a team 31/5 in a 221-run chase to reach where they did? Under the night sky of Mumbai, KKR’s valiance displayed what sports can be. Never over, until it truly is.

One good over with the ball and we would have won: Pat Cummins

Despite the shattering loss, like a true leader, Eoin Morgan was seen instilling belief in his team in a video posted by the Kolkata Knight Riders on their official Instagram account.

“Well played, Patty [Pat Cummins], well played, boss”, he consoles a dejected and emotional Cummins. The one who nearly snatched victory from the jaws of defeat. “That was close. Andre was unbelievable”, says Cummins, giving credit to Russel’s blitzkrieg.

“Are you heartbroken?’ he is asked. “Yes, let in too many runs with the ball”, he says with a nod of denial. “But scored as many with the bat”, he is told. “One good over with the ball and we would have won… Anyway, that’s cricket”. Despite his heroic efforts, Cummins took it upon himself.

The scene shifts to Morgan, who honestly accept what hurt his team. “First 5-6 overs did hurt us, but the beauty of today, and playing here reiterates that we are never out of any game. We have an unbelievable squad, unbelievable talent that matches any team in the competition, and if we need reminding of that, today is the game where it happens,” he says.

“Dre [Andre Russell], DK [Dinesh Karthik] for that partnership [81 off just 39], absolutely unbelievable. Well done guys and Pat”, adds Morgan amid loud claps, giving a special mention to the three heroes of the night as Russell smiles in satisfaction as if he had finally come to terms with what transpired.

Morgan used the word “unbelievable” thrice in a minute, but for a game that the three men he mentioned took where they took, it would not have been unfair to use it many more times.
