Pakistan Cricket Board to spend Rs 1 billion of Rawalpindi Stadium

The third edition of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) recently came to a close. The Islamabad United beat the Peshawar Zalmi in the Final at the Karachi International Stadium. Meanwhile, the venue hosted the first game ever in the history of the tournament. In the opening season, the entire league was played in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

The second season saw the event coming for the maiden occasion to Pakistan. However, the nation was a witness to only the Final between Quetta Gladiators and the Peshawar Zalmi. In the third season, the group games were staged in the UAE, but playoffs, which consisted of three matches, and the Final was played in Lahore and Karachi respectively.

“Have to settle a few things”- Najam Sethi

Last season, Najam Sethi, the chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) expressed his desire to bring the entire league to Pakistan. The preparations for the same is well and truly palpable as the chairman has mentioned that the board is planning to invest Rs 1 billion to renovate the Rawalpindi Stadium. “The PCB plans to spend Rs1 billion on the uplift of the stadium to give it a real international look,” Sethi said.

A committee, including PCB Chief Operating Officer Subhan Ahmed, Shakil Shaikh, the advisor to PCB Chairman and the Rawalpindi officials, would be formed, which will decide on how to start proceedings surrounding the renovation. Meanwhile, Sethi also mentioned about the future courses of action in order to get things in place.

“However, before that, we have to settle a few things in coordination with Rawalpindi administration. From next year onwards, our plan is to organise the PSL and international matches in Multan and Rawalpindi. That is the reason why we are planning to invest in these two stadiums,” he added.
