Pakistan cricketer Nasir Jamshed challenges PCB corruption charges
Jamshed was one of five players who came under the scanner of the anti-corruption unit following the spot-fixing scandal and was subsequently handed a punishment by the PCB.
Former Pakistan opener Nasir Jamshed has decided to challenge the multiple codes of conduct charges levied on him by the Pakistan Cricket Board. In February this year, PCB had charged the batsman for five breaches of Anti-Corruption Code for Participants including fixing matches, accepting money to influence games, and inducing other players to get involved in corrupt activities. Jamshed was already serving a one-year ban due to non-cooperation with the PCB’s spot-fixing investigation during PSL 2017 when PCB laid these charges.
As a result of Jamshed’s decision to challenge the charges, the PCB referred the matter for adjudication to an Anti-Corruption Tribunal, comprising retired Justice Fazal-e-Miran, Shahzaib Masood and former bowler Aqib Javed. According to the official statement from the cricket board said, “PCB remains resilient in its fight against corruption in cricket and shall take all measures necessary to uproot this menace.”
The PCB has acted with fresh evidence making its claim
The PCB had acted after the emergence of fresh evidence, centering around alleged meetings in the UK prior to last season’s PSL. Some of the overwhelming evidence that PCB has been claiming to have against Jamshed throughout the year include a collection of WhatsApp voice recordings allegedly between Jamshed and others also implicated in the case; these recordings were leaked to the media.
However, Jamshed has rejected the charges since the beginning and, in fact, made strong allegations against PCB. In a video released on his official Twitter account, the cricketer alleged that the PCB was conspiring by coercing other players to testify against him in the scandal, as reported by Cricbuzz.
Nasir Jamshed was one of five players who came under the scanner of the anti-corruption unit following the spot-fixing scandal and was subsequently handed a punishment by the PCB. Sharjeel Khan and Khalid Latif were handed five-year bans for their involvement while Mohammad Irfan and Mohammad Nawaz were banned for 12 and two months respectively for their failure to report a corrupt approach. Shahzaib Hasan was also charged and is presently undergoing legal proceedings before a three-member tribunal.
