Amid the COVID-19 outbreak, the cricketing schedule has been rocked upside down. And, there is no confirmation if tournament like Asia Cup 2020 will be played or postponed. Now, Asian Cricket Council has given a big update over the same. There is no doubt over the fact that a lot of things are on the stake in the post Coronavirus era.
The cricket associations are not in a position to suffer any kind of financial hit going into the future. The majority of them want international cricket to return as soon as possible. Moreover, many players have also begun with their outdoor training. And, it is one of those signs that cricket will soon return to normalcy. Also, West Indies have left for England to play three-match Test series starting from next month.
ACC conducts a video conference for the discussion over Asia Cup 2020
ACC said that the final call on Asia Cup 2020 will be taken in the near future. They added that the venue where the event will be organized was also discussed during the video conference held on Monday. ACC mentioned that Sourav Ganguly also attended that meeting for the first time after he was appointed as BCCI’s chief.
“In particular, the board emphasized on the importance of holding the Asia Cup 2020. In light of the impact and consequences of the Covid-19 pandemic, possible venue options for the Asia Cup 2020 were discussed and it was decided to take the final decision in due course,” the ACC update stated.
“The Board was also apprised of the status and progress of the ACC’s involvement with the Asian Games 2022 in Hangzou, China. The Board noted with satisfaction the ongoing activities and initiatives of the ACC. The meeting was chaired by the ACC President Nazmul Hassan. Attending for the first time was the President of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), Sourav Ganguly,” ACC said in their press release.
Sri Lanka Cricket gives a big update
Pakistan is the host of Asia Cup 2020. But, the tournament is expected to take place at a neutral venue due to the political tension between Pakistan and India. Also, in March, Ehsan Mani, PCB chief had also given his opinion over the same. Now, Shammi Sliva, Sri Lanka Cricket President has revealed that Pakistan Cricket Board has granted them the permission to host Asia Cup 2020 following the current conditions in the world.
“We had a discussion with Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) and they have already agreed to our hosting this edition due to the present world situation. We had an online ACC meeting today [8 June] and they basically gave us the green light to host the tournament,” Shammi told Ceylon Today.
