Legendary Pakistani cricketer Younis Khan has announced his retirement from international cricket at a recent press conference. The elegant batsman has been a pillar stone of the national side over the last decade and a half. The Test series against the West Indies will be his last Test assignment. The announcement has come as a surprise for many as the move was not expected to come in such a sudden manner.
The veteran Test player is 23 runs short of the 10000 run landmark in Test cricket. Former Pakistani cricketer Wasim Akram was all praise for Younis Khan in a recent interaction with the Geo.tv. He has quoted Younis to be a hardworking player. The proactive nature of Younis is something that always benefited the national side.
“Younis Khan is one of the best batsmen we have had. And he has always given his best for Pakistan. Younis was always a very hard-working player. He was proactive in all fields of the game, whether it was batting, fielding, helping others out during practice. He was a proper team-man. The way he has handled his image, he will always be respected for it. The void left by Khan will be filled in years,” quoted Akram.
Younis has featured in 115 Tests for Pakistan and has a staggering average of 53.06. He has amassed 9977 runs thus far and is looking good to join the elite list if batsmen to cross the 10000 run mark in Test cricket. He has a top score of 313 to his name which he had scored against Sri Lanka back in 2009.
Also, recently when Younis Khan had hit a brilliant ton in the Sydney Test against Australia earlier this year, he had become the first player in the history of Test crickeet to have registered centuries in 11 countries. The news of his retirment comes as a double blow for the Pakistani fans. Earlier, skipper Misbah Ul Haq had announced his retirement citing the West Indies tour to be his last.
