Pakistan on the verge of an unwanted record with 13 consecutive Test defeats in Australia

The Pakistan Cricket Team tour of Australia is in full flow. The caravan has now moved on to the Adelaide Oval for the iconic Pink ball Test. The Men in Green have endured another forgettable tour of Australia thus far after having lost the three-match Twenty20 International series 0-3 and the opening Test of the 2-match series by an innings and five runs at the Gabba in Brisbane.

After getting bowled out for a meagre 240 in the first innings against the incisive bowling attack of the Aussies, the Pakistani bowlers- a relatively inexperienced pace attack of Shaheen Shah Afridi, Naseem Shah, and Imran Khan Junior- were shellacked to the tune of 580 as David Warner and Marnus Labuschagne racked up their respective Test hundreds.

The Pakistanis did fight in the second innings with Babar Azam scoring his second Test hundred and Mohammad Rizwan compiled a beautiful 95, but even that was not enough for Azhar Ali’s men to avoid an innings defeat.

This was, however, nothing new for a visiting Pakistani team in Australia or their fans who have watched their side get shellacked tour-after-tour in the past 20 years. Let alone win, Pakistan hasn’t even managed to draw a Test match in Australia since 1995.

Often we have seen that Pakistan sides’ just turn on Australian soil with a resigned feeling of an eventual loss, something which Mark Taylor, former Australian captain, perfectly summed up when he said, “I think there’s a bit of a feeling that when Pakistan come to Australia straight away they’re thinking it will be tough & they’ll struggle to win, which is the wrong attitude & it’s hard to break. You need a strong side with a strong leader to overcome that” Taylor was quoted by PakPasssion.net.

Pakistan have lost 13 Tests on Australian soil on the bounce

The loss in Brisbane was Pakistan’s 13th consecutive Test loss in Australia. Their last four series Down Under read: 0-3 in 1999, 0-3 in 2004, 0-3 in 2009-10 and 0-3 in 2016-17. And, if Azhar Ali’s men manage to lose another Test match- which happens to be the Pink ball Test in Adelaide- they will have to face the ignominy of being the record-holders for the worst possible losing streak in a particular country. 

Currently, Pakistan is level with Bangladesh when it comes to the worst-possible streak in a particular Test-playing nation. Bangladesh had to go through that ignominy in the early part of their Test days between 2001-2004 when they lost 13 on the bounce.
