Pakistan Speedster Mohammad Amir recently stepped out of the world of international cricket, which sent the fans in shock. He alleged Pakistan Cricket of not treating him well and giving his due chances where he deserved them. Many big names in the world of cricket questioned his decision and added that Pakistan Cricket should look into the matter. In the latest turn of events, former cricketer turned commentator Aamir Sohail lashed at Pakistan backroom staff for not doing their proper roles.
He accused that Pakistan coaches failed to do their roles as a support system for players. It is their duty to understand the player’s issues and fix them, and it certainly didn’t happen in Amir’s case. Amir also blamed the team management for torturing him. Sohail also added that a player should not be dropped immediately after a bad performance, and an opportunity should be given to him to bounce back. Sohail believed that coaches should work on weak points of players and push them to rise.
“In Amir’s case, the support staff associated with the Pakistan side should have jumped in to help him if he was having any problems and was not delivering to expectations – what else is the support staff there to do? Coaches should be there to help fix player’s problems, not to just say ‘shabash’ and clap. Having coaches to just say ‘shabash,’ and other words of encouragement defeats the purpose of specialized help,” wrote Sohail in his recent blog for PakPassion.net.
‘Confrontational set up’ is our biggest problem: Aamir Sohail
Amir was one of the most demanding pacers in Pakistan’s line-up. The left-arm pacer played an essential role in the country’s ICC Champions Trophy 2017. He had to hang his boots when he asked for rest from the selectors, and they ultimately dropped him in turn. Sohail added that there is a “confrontational set up” due to which players don’t go well in line with management.
“Instead of an atmosphere of unity and harmony in the side, we have a confrontational setup which is probably the cause of players feeling disillusioned with the team management, so in that sense, Amir’s decision to walk away from playing for Pakistan should not really be a surprise to anyone,” he concluded.
