Pakistan v Sri Lanka 2017: 2nd Test, Day 5 – Statistical Highlights

After nearly 10 years, Pakistan lost a Test series at home after they failed to chase down 119 runs needed on the final day of the 2-match Test series with five wickets in hand. Sri Lanka returned strong on the final day to dismiss the set pair and see off a historic victory after losing to India 3-0 at home.

Here we look at all the stats and records created during the day’s play.

1 – For the first time since 2008, Pakistan lost a Test series at home (in Pakistan and UAE). Their last loss in a Test series at home was against South Africa in 2007. This series loss is the 2nd for Pakistan at UAE as their first came in 2002 where two of their 3-match Test series against Australia played in Sharjah.

2 – Number of 4th innings hundreds in Tests for Asad Shafiq. Among Pakistan players, only Younis Khan (5) has scored more 4th innings centuries. Ijaz Ahmed and Javed Miandad also have two Test hundreds in the 4th innings.

6 – Dilruwan Perera’s fifty-plus and 5-wicket haul in this game is the 6th instance of a Sri Lankan player scoring 50+ and bagging a 5-fer in a Test. This is the 2nd time Dilruwan has done this double with the first time being in the last year’s Test against Australia at Galle. Chaminda Vaas had also done this double on two different occasions.

9 – Number of centuries for Asad Shafiq at No.6 or lower position in Test cricket. Only Adam Gilchrist (15), Ian Botham (11) and Gary Sobers (9) have scored nine or more Test hundreds at No.6 or lower position.

13 – This is Sri Lanka’s 13th Test series away from home with their last coming against Zimbabwe in 2016. Prior to that, they won 1-0 in the 2-match Test series in England in 2014.

173 – The partnership stand between Asad Shafiq and Sarfraz Ahmed of 173 runs is the 3rd highest 6th wicket stand coming in at 52/5 or lower score. Dinesh Chandimal and Dhananjaya de Silva put on 211 last year against Australia from 28/5 while Inzamam-ul-Haq and Abdul Razzaq put on 206 from 39/5 against Windies in 2000.

1902 – The last instance of a team winning a Test match after getting bowled out under 100 in their 2nd innings was way back in 1902 by Australia against England at The Oval. Overall, Sri Lanka winning after getting bowled out for 96 in their 2nd innings is the 4th such occasion.
