Australia continued their winning streak in the ODI format with a clinical victory in the first of the 5-match ODI series against Pakistan. The hosts have rested a few regular players for this series to allow others to stake their claim. Batting first after winning the toss, Pakistan posted 280/5 in their 50 overs with help of an unbeaten century from Haris Sohail. Captain Aaron Finch’s 116 was well backed by Shaun Marsh’s unbeaten 91 as the Aussies chased down the target with eight wickets and an over to spare.
Here are all the major stats and numbers recorded during Australia’s comfortable win:
A record chase by Australia:
281 – The 281-run chase by Australia is the 2nd highest successful run-chase by any team in the 237 ODI matches hosted by the Sharjah Cricket Ground. Windies chased down 285 also against Pakistan in 1993 which is still the highest ODI chase at this venue.
281 – This chase of 281 is Australia’s 2nd highest successful ODI chase against Pakistan. They chased down a target of 316 during the 1998 Lahore ODI against the Pakistan team in only 48.5 overs.
281 – The target of 281 gunned down by Australia is the highest they successfully chased in an ODI for the loss of two or fewer wickets. The previous highest target Australia chased down for the loss of two or fewer wickets was 268 against South Africa during the 2002 Durban ODI. Australia ended up with a total of 271/2 from 47.5 overs.
A line-up of left-handers:
6 – For the first time in their history, Pakistan fielded as many as six left-handed batsmen in an ODI game. They have had those many batsmen in four T20I matches but never had in a playing XI of a Test or ODI before.
A rare ton in a win for Finch:
4 – This century brought an end to Aaron Finch’s ODI century streak of resulting in defeats. Each of his previous four ODI tons came on the losing side for the Aussies. The last ODI ton by Finch in an Australian win was against India during the 2016 Canberra ODI.
2014 – Finch’s century in this game is one of his three ODI centuries while chasing. His previous two tons in ODI chases came against England in 2014 – One during a victory and other in a defeat.
A record partnership:
172 – The 172-run partnership between Aaron Finch and Shaun Marsh is Australia’s 2nd highest stand for any wicket in the UAE. Michael Clarke and Shane Watson had a 197-run stand between them during the 2009 Abu Dhabi ODI from two down for three runs on the board chasing a target of 198.
457 – A total of 457 runs were aggregated by both the teams for their first three wickets; the 2nd highest aggregated for the first three wickets in an ODI hosted by UAE. The 1994 Sharjah ODI between Pakistan and New Zealand witnessed a collective aggregate of 527 runs for the first three wickets.
