Jammu and Kashmir captain Parvez Rasool made a comeback in the national team when he featured in the 1st T20I between Indian and England. He came back after three years after playing a solitary ODI against Bangladesh in 2013.
It would have been a proud moment for Rasool as he has fought several barrier and obstacles to reach this level but during the national anthem he led himself into controversy when he was spotted chewing a gum and standing in a very casual manner. The moment didn’t go down well with fans and they took to their twitter handle to express their disappointment at Rasool’s act.
While presenting the nation anthem one is expected to stand in an upright posture and remain in ‘attention’ position. Section 3 of the Prevention of Insult to National Honour Act, 1971 states that whoever intentionally prevents the singing of the Indian National Anthem or causes disturbance to any assembly engaged in such singing shall be punished with imprisonment for a term which may extend to three years, or with fine, or with both.
According to the law, Rasool didn’t cause any disturbance intentionally and didn’t prevent to the singing of the national anthem so he wouldn’t be reprimanded legally. But the fans were very disappointed with the approach shown by Rasool which clearly suggested his disrespect to the national anthem. To promote nationalistic identity, theatres throughout the country is instructed to play the national anthem before the movie and someone who doesn’t rise draws the fury from people around them.

Making a comeback after 3 years especially after playing a solitary ODI is not easy so the benefit of the doubt should be given to Rasool considering the fact that he might have been preoccupied with thoughts of making a comeback in the national team. It was absolutely a mistake on his part but as fans and supporters of the national team, we must keep in mind that this kind of things keeps happening and we should be sympathetic towards him.
Rasool will try to put this behind him and come back stronger in the must win 2nd T20I.
