The hosts Australia led by their skipper Steve Smith have played a dominant and commanding brand of cricket in the Ashes 2017-18. In the entire Test series, they have had the upper hand over the lacklustre and drooping spirits of the visiting English team.
The Aussies have already reclaimed the prestigious Urn and are also keen on beating England 4-0 in the five-match Test series. Fast bowler Pat Cummins has now hinted that the team management might rest the trio of Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood and Cummins for the limited-overs series against England.
The pacers have looked a class apart when compared to the opposition team bowlers, which have propelled the results in favour of the host team. But after a great run, the Australian team management would want to give the fast bowlers some much-needed rest. Though they are still part of the ODI squad as of now, but the selectors have also included Andrew Tye and Jhye Richardson, who can serve as the back-up options.
Reassessment after 5th Test
Cummins stated that the decision of giving a definite break to the frontline bowlers will be taken after the conclusion of the final Test match of the Ashes series. He mentioned that a little time off the field becomes necessary after a big series like this. The express pacer also revealed that after bowling a lot of overs in the longest format, it is never a big deal in limited-overs cricket.
“They’re going to reassess after this game. There was a bit of chat we might rest from one or two. We’ve got a bit of a break before the ODIs start. I don’t know yet. It takes a little bit to get over each Test but once you’re over a Test, you’re ready to start bowling and 10 overs in an ODI is a bit easier than a Test,” said Cummins as quoted by cricket.com.
Never thought of surviving through the five Tests
The 24-year-old has had an injury prone career so far. Before the start of the Test series against England, he figured out that these five games will be a huge test. Cummins was himself very surprised that he was able to do so well throughout the series.
“At the start of the summer, being pretty realistic I thought five games would have been a long stretch. I’ve been really surprised with how well I’ve pulled up after each game,” he affirmed.
