What are the things that the women cannot do, you may ask. They can hit the biggest of sixes out of the park. Or they can run faster than some of their male counterparts between the wickets. They can kill their opponents with five and six wicket hauls in a tournament as big as the World Cup. It took one month of the quadrennial event for people all over the world to finally recognize women’s cricket, and give them the credit they have deserved for years.

England beat India in the finals of the ICC Women’s World Cup 2017 at the home of cricket. But from a broader perspective, neither of the two teams loss, but in fact, women’s cricket won. Lord’s hosted a final of the women’s world cup after 24 years, and the fortress was packed to its capacity. That was proof that the sisters have arrived and how. As for India, who were remarkable during their journey to the finals, the loss will be bitter because this would have been an end to their years long drought of the coveted silverware.

Not just England and India, all the teams in the tournament had an inspirational message to send across. And they have inspired the young girls to pursue cricket as their career. Former England cricketer Paul Collingwood took to Twitter to congratulate the England team on winning the cup, and also revealed that his daughters are so inspired by the triumph that they want to play cricket too. This is what he wrote, “I’ve been trying for years and today finally my daughters want to play cricket! Thank you @englandcricket women, inspirational #WCwinners.

Remembered or soon forgotten?

Certainly, the girls have toiled enough to reach where they are now. And this tournament marks a new revolution in cricket which we ignored for a long time. Whether we will continue watching the support after the shell life of the mega event has expired, will be known in the near future.
