PCB sets up new committee comprising Wasim Akram, Misbah-ul-Haq
The committee will also help in formulating playing conditions for domestic cricket.
Ever since the election of their former captain Imran Khan as its prime minister, Pakistan cricketers and fans have expected things to move in the right direction in their country. There have been shake-ups and on Friday, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) set up a four-member committee for the promotion of the game at all levels in the country.
The new body has among its members, former captains Wasim Akram and Misbah-ul-Haq besides Pakistan’s former woman cricketer Urooj Mumtaz. Former Pakistani player and selector Mohsin Khan will be the chairman of the committee, Sport360 reported.
The PCB posted a video statement on its official Twitter account saying the special committee will advise chairman Ehsan Mani in reviewing various plans for the promotion of the game at horizontal and vertical levels across the country. Mani became the new chief of the PCB last month and he removed a quartet of advisors who were appointed during his previous tenure and one of them is the former speedster, Shoaib Akhtar.
The committee will also help in formulating playing conditions for domestic cricket besides overseeing the appointment of selection committees and national coaches.
In world rankings, Pakistan are placed seventh out of 10 teams in Tests; fifth in ODIs and first in T20Is. Pakistan have won the 50-over World Cup once (1992), World T20 once (2009) and also the Champions Trophy once (2017).
Committee will have a 360-degree view
It was learned that the new committee will meet the chief selector and coaches of the men’s, women’s and junior teams three times a year. It will also review plans for the development of officials like umpires, referees, and curators across Pakistan and also receive an annual assessment on how they perform.
Three other former cricketers – Mudassar Nazar, Zakir Khan, and Haroon Rasheed have also been brought in to assist the committee. While Nazar will be the director of academies, Zakir has been made the director of international cricket and Rasheed as the director of domestic cricket.
