Peter Handscomb backs Marcus Harris to be picked in the national team
Will he be picked for the upcoming India Test series?
Marcus Harris, the Victoria opener, has earned the back of his captain, Peter Handscomb after he scored a brilliant double-ton against NSW in a Sheffield Shield game at the MCG. He was adjudged the Man of The Match for his 250*, as Victoria crushed New South Wales by a mammoth margin of an innings and 107 runs in the ongoing domestic season.
Harris, 26, had left Western Australia with a bad taste as the then team’s coach Justin Langer, now in charge of the Australian national team, had called him mediocre with flashes of brilliance. But since then, the opener has compiled 1790 runs in the domestic circuit in the first-class matches. Harris has scored eight Shield centuries, two of which came last season. In the 65 first-class matches he has played, the cricketer has amassed 3,928 runs at an average of 35.38.
Handscomb and Nevill delighted for Harris
Marcus Harris has had a big impression on Peter Handscomb since joining Victoria from WA a couple of years ago. The skipper was all praise about Harris after the match and was perplexed on how he hasn’t got a chance at the highest level yet. “He’s really put his hand up, but he’s been doing a good job for us since he came here. Handscomb said. It’s a shame that it’s taken this long for his name to come up. I think he was a chance earlier, for sure,” he was quoted saying by cricket.com.au.
During the match, Victoria captain Peter Handscomb, who is hopeful to get a national call-up himself, was absolutely fuming when he threw his wicket away with a very poor shot after doing all the hard work to get to 48. He needs a few good knocks under his belt as he is expected to be drafted in the Test side for the upcoming India series in December.
NSW captain Peter Nevill was also impressed with Harris’s heroics with the bat, but observed the result might have been different, had they not dropped his catch. Having said that, Nevill didn’t take anything away from the 26-year-old for his exceptional knock.
