Peter Handscomb just wants to play for Australia irrespective of the format
“Any runs are good runs."
Right-handed batsman Peter Handscomb was recently dropped from the Australian squad for the two-match Test series against Sri Lanka, set to start on Thursday, January 24 with the opening match at the Gabba in Brisbane. The 27-year-old from Victoria had a lacklustre Test series against India and was dropped from the Melbourne contest after the first two matches in Adelaide and Perth respectively.
Nevertheless, he came back for the final Test in Sydney and got 37 runs in the only inning he batted. Thereafter, Peter played the three-match ODI series against Virat Kohli’s men and scored a half-century in the second ODI at the Adelaide Oval. Recently, Handscomb remarked that he’s not bothered about reclaiming his stake in the Test team and rather wants to represent his country in any format.
“Any runs are good runs. I’m just trying to play for Australia in any format. If I’m doing well in the one-dayers, happy days. I can push my case at some stage for red-ball again, but at the moment I’ve got to concentrate on the white ball,” Handscomb was quoted as saying in cricket.com.au. As far as Test cricket is concerned, the Aussies are next scheduled to play the overseas Ashes in August and September.
The power we’ve got in this team is amazing
Handscomb also said that Australia would want to follow the blueprint of England in limited-overs cricket. The Three Lions are International Cricket Council’s (ICC) number one ranked ODI team and are one of the favourites to win the World Cup, starting May 30 in England and Wales. Moreover, Handscomb remarked that the Aussies have enough firepower in their armoury.
“They go pretty hard, but they’ve got their controllers as well. They have (Joe) Root and (Eoin) Morgan who play that holding role in the middle. I’m looking to go at a run a ball and play the spin really well. We’re looking to rotate the strike against spin and take it deep.
The power we’ve got in this team is amazing, as long as we get them in the last 10 overs. If you change your game plan, it’s not going to work straight away. For us, it’s worked pretty well pretty quickly, but we’ve got some things to learn,” he added.
