Peter Nevill is all set to return to the Test fold for the first Ashes Test against England in Brisbane at the Gabba. The selectors are impressed with his form in the ongoing Sheffield Shield season and they might drop Matthew Wade who disappointed during the India tour. However, the new round of the domestic season will begin on Monday and only extraordinary turn of events could keep Nevill away from returning to the national side.

The 32-year-old was controversially axed a year ago along with the likes of Adam Voges, Callum Ferguson and others when the team lost to South Africa embarrassingly at home. Nevill was guilty being a silent warrior behind the wickets and was not known to chirp while wicket-keeping. Despite being gritty with the bat and scoring enough runs batting lower down the order, he had to make way for more enterprising Matthew Wade.

Selectors demand more presence from Nevill

According to the Daily, the sources have claimed that Peter Nevill will return to the Australian side after being axed 12 months ago. “Unless there’s a dramatic twist in the Sheffield Shield round starting on Monday, Nevill looks poised to cap an extraordinary roller-coaster ride and return to the post he was so controversially axed from 12 months ago,” he said as quoted by the Daily. It is also being learnt that the team management is demanding more presence from him behind the wickets.

“Australia don’t expect Nevill to completely change his personality and suddenly be a loud voice out on the field. However, they’re demanding more presence from the 32-year-old gloveman,” he informed. It would also be interesting to see if the selectors keep their faith in Glenn Maxwell at number 6 who fared pretty decently during the India tour. Though if they look out for a seam-bowling all-rounder, then Hilton Cartwright could also come into the mix.

The first Test between England and Australia is all set to commence on November 23.
