Peter Nevill, the Australian wicketkeeper-batsman has signed a multi-year contract with Sydney Sixers effective from this year. The news was revealed by the Big Bash League (BBL) franchise. Nevill was part of the Melbourne Renegades for past five seasons and shared the wicketkeeping duties with Matthew Wade. Now, he is all set to return to the Sydney Sixers with whom he won the title in the inaugural edition of the tournament.
Sixers already boast of players like Moises Henriques, Jackson Bird, Johan Botha, Nathan Lyon, Nic Maddinson and Steven O’Keefe in their line-up. Nevill played as many as 27 matches for Renegades across last 5 seasons and will accompany another fast bowler Sean Abbott, who is also set to join Sixers for the upcoming edition.
Nevill delighted to join Sixers again
The 31-year-old was extremely pleased to join his old teammates again and hoped to win another title for Sixers with the same bunch of cricketers. “It was a great opportunity to be back playing with people that I’ve played with extensively at NSW. One of my fondest cricket memories was winning the BBL|01 title with the Sixers and I’d love to win another one with the same guys,” he said.
“My best mates play for NSW and the Sixers so the ability to play all season with through, through state and then BBL cricket was a real attraction. The Sixers have a great environment, given the nucleus is similar to NSW, and I love the culture. Another factor was being able to spend the festive period at home in Sydney,” the Australian Test player added.
The coach of the franchise, Greg Shipperd welcomed Nevill to the setup and termed him as one of the favourite sons of New South Wales (NSW). “The Sydney Sixers are very pleased that one of NSW and their own favourite sons is coming home to continue his T20 career. Peter brings his experiences from outside back with him and we hope to utilise his domestic and international knowledge in our favour. Highly respected throughout the cricketing community he will fit straight back into a squad he knows well. It is important that we continue the progress we made in achieving a grand final last year and peter with bat gloves and as a leader may just be that final piece of the puzzle,” he said.
