Shankar has had a topsy-turvy run on the cricket field thus far. He made his debut for India back in March 2018 and has strained a wee bit, In the T20 tri-nation series two years ago in Sri Lanka, he couldn’t step up. Hence, he had to face the axe. In the final against Bangladesh, he strained to score runs when the required rate was going up. But Dinesh Karthik’s heroics won India the game.
Shankar made his comeback in 2019, making his ODI debut versus Australia and he was a part of the New Zealand tour as well. His biggest breakthrough came in the 2019 World Cup where he was picked ahead of Ambati Rayudu, who earlier was a prolific run-scorer for the Men in Blue. He played his first game against Pakistan at the Old Trafford in Manchester and struck gold right away.
In his very first over, he got rid of opener Imam-ul-Haq and then went on to pin their former captain Sarfaraz Ahmed. To his dismay, after two more games, the talented cricketer developed an injury and was ruled out of the tournament. He hasn’t played international cricket ever since then. It remains to be seen whether or not Shankar makes his comeback to the national team.
He last played for India A in the New Zealand tour earlier this year. He is now set to be part of the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in the 2020 edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL), starting September 19 in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
