Piyush Chawla has decided to shift his domestic allegiance from Uttar Pradesh to Gujarat after playing for his home state Uttar Pradesh for 12 long years. He hopes the wickets in Gujarat will assist the spinners and expressed his desire to have a better stint with his new team.

The 28-year-old leg spinner explained that the pitches in UP are either conducive to seamers or are flat due to the conditions. With age on his side, he feels that a good couple of seasons in the domestic circuit might earn him a place in the national team.

“To be honest, Gujarat is a side that won 3-4 trophies in the last three years. As a player, I thought this was the right time to make a move. The kind of wickets you get in the Western region — which has a red soil layering — help the spinners better.“I am only 28, and who knows I might still have a couple of good seasons, where I can contribute with the ball, and bat as well. You never know, things might change again,” Chawla said during an interview with Sportstarlive when asked about the reason for quitting from his home state.

Chawla consulted UP captain Suresh Raina

The leg-spinner also consulted the captain of Uttar Pradesh Ranji team, Suresh Raina, before contemplating his move. Chawla quoted that Raina wanted him to stay back but then supported his decision.

“I had a long, long chat with Raina. He asked me to stay back in UP, but I explained my reasons to him and he understood my point. As a good friend, he backed my decision and was happy about my new assignment, because he understood what I am trying to do,” said the member of 2011 World Cup winning side.

Piyush last played for India in December 2012 and has been striving hard to make a comeback since.
