<strong>Players who missed out on ICC ODI XI 2015:</strong> The ICC announced its Test and ODI Teams of the Year, chosen by a specially appointed selection panel, chaired by the ICC’s Cricket Committee chairman and former India captain Anil Kumble and a jury comprising of former West Indies fast bowler Ian Bishop, ex-England batsman Mark Butcher, former Australia women’s captain Belinda Clark and G. Viswanath, Deputy Editor of <em>The Hindu &amp; Sportstar</em>. The qualification period ran from September 18, 2014, to September 13, 2015.

While the players who made it into the top XI for the calendar year have been in the news, there have been other players who missed out on the opportunity from a very close margin.

The New Zealand opener had a stunning start to the 2015 season with a World Cup double century. Guptill scored 237 runs of 163 balls against the West Indies. Guptill was also New Zealand’s highest run getter in the ODI World Cup this year with 547 runs under his name. In the 34 innings that he has played since September 2014, he has amassed 1381 runs at an average of 46.03. He is the fourth highest run-getter in the period that ran from September 2014 to September 2015.

It was disappointing for the Indian fans that only Shami could make it to the ICC ODI XI. Indian opener Rohit Sharma had a phenomenal last 12 months too. The Mumbai batsman scored 833 runs in the 14 matches that he played at a staggering average of 64.07 with a strike rate just above 106. On November 13, 2014, Sharma made the world record score of 264 of 173 balls which remains to be the highest individual score in ODIs.

If one opener came out all guns blazing, the other Indian opener wasn’t far behind. In terms of runs, Dhawan is the only Indian batsman to have scored over 1000 runs (1006 runs in 21 matches) since last September. He has scored 3 hundreds and 6 fifties in the phase and played a masterly innings of 137 against South Africa in the 2015 World Cup.

The Indian batting modern master, Virat Kohli, amassed runs at an average of 47.26 since last September. Albeit the stylish right-hander has looked out of sorts in phases in this calendar year, he has managed to secure a good record in the last 12 months. Kohli has scored 898 runs with three tons and three half centuries. The Indians definitely wanted to see this man in the list.

Among the players who have scored over 900 runs since September 2014, Morgan has the distinction of being the second on the list of batsman with most sixes. Morgan hit 32 sixes in the time frame between September 2014 and September 2015, next to AB de Villiers’ 41. Morgan scored 903 runs, the second best by an English batsman in the given time slot (Joe Root being the top scorer with 945) in 28 matches. The English skipper hit 7 half centuries during this period. He certainly deserved to be in the ICC ODI XI.

The Sri Lankan captain has been in good touch since the time he has taken over the captaincy reigns. Mathews has scored 902 runs in 24 innings that he has played at an average of 47.47 with the highest score of 139* against India in November last year. He has also picked up 20 wickets at an economy rate of 4.90. His all-round performances have been the pillar stone of Sri Lankan cricket in last 14 months.

He has also scored 547 runs at an average just under 40 which makes him such a wonderful all-rounder. He scored a century and 4 half centuries in this phase and also picked up 2 four-wicket hauls.

Indian pace bowler has impressed everyone with his pace bowling. Yadav has taken 35 wickets since last September, which makes him the 5<sup>th</sup> highest wicket taker in this phase. He has taken 35 wickets in just 18 matches at an average of 21.82. He has 3 four-wicket hauls to his name with a best of 4/31. Among Indian bowlers, Yadav has bowled 9 maidens in this phase which is next to only Ashwin’s 11 maidens.

Dale Steyn has bowled 13 maidens in ODIs since September 2014, the best by any South African and the second best overall after Boult’s 21. He has picked up 30 wickets in 20 matches with an economy rate of 4.77.

The fast bowler singlehandedly ripped apart the English batting in the ICC World Cup 2015 with figures of 7/33. Southee picked up 30 wickets in 20 matches since September 2014 at an average of 32.13.

However, his performances have not yielded him enough credits as much as he should have got. Finn has taken 2 five-wicket hauls with a best of 5/33 in the 23 matches that he has played. During this time period, Finn has taken 36 wickets, which is quite an achievement!

<p><strong>Players who missed out on ICC ODI XI 2015:</strong> The ICC announced its Test and ODI Teams of the Year, chosen by a specially appointed selection panel, chaired by the ICC’s Cricket Committee chairman and former India captain Anil Kumble and a jury comprising of former West Indies fast bowler Ian Bishop, ex-England batsman Mark Butcher, former Australia women’s captain Belinda Clark and G. Viswanath, Deputy Editor of <em>The Hindu &amp; Sportstar</em>. The qualification period ran from September 18, 2014, to September 13, 2015.</p>
<p>While the players who made it into the top XI for the calendar year have been in the news, there have been other players who missed out on the opportunity from a very close margin.</p>
<h4>Here is the list of <strong>Players who missed out on ICC ODI XI 2015,</strong> who had an excellent record to back their performances.</h4>
<h5><strong>Martin Guptill:</strong></h5>

<p>The New Zealand opener had a stunning start to the 2015 season with a World Cup double century. Guptill scored 237 runs of 163 balls against the West Indies. Guptill was also New Zealand’s highest run getter in the ODI World Cup this year with 547 runs under his name. In the 34 innings that he has played since September 2014, he has amassed 1381 runs at an average of 46.03. He is the fourth highest run-getter in the period that ran from September 2014 to September 2015.</p>

<h5><strong>Rohit Sharma:</strong></h5>

<p>It was disappointing for the Indian fans that only Shami could make it to the ICC ODI XI. Indian opener Rohit Sharma had a phenomenal last 12 months too. The Mumbai batsman scored 833 runs in the 14 matches that he played at a staggering average of 64.07 with a strike rate just above 106. On November 13, 2014, Sharma made the world record score of 264 of 173 balls which remains to be the highest individual score in ODIs.</p>
<h5><strong>Shikhar Dhawan:</strong></h5>

<p>If one opener came out all guns blazing, the other Indian opener wasn’t far behind. In terms of runs, Dhawan is the only Indian batsman to have scored over 1000 runs (1006 runs in 21 matches) since last September. He has scored 3 hundreds and 6 fifties in the phase and played a masterly innings of 137 against South Africa in the 2015 World Cup.</p>
<h5><strong>Virat Kohli:</strong></h5>

<p>The Indian batting modern master, Virat Kohli, amassed runs at an average of 47.26 since last September. Albeit the stylish right-hander has looked out of sorts in phases in this calendar year, he has managed to secure a good record in the last 12 months. Kohli has scored 898 runs with three tons and three half centuries. The Indians definitely wanted to see this man in the list.</p>
<h5><strong>Eoin Morgan:</strong></h5>

<p>Among the players who have scored over 900 runs since September 2014, Morgan has the distinction of being the second on the list of batsman with most sixes. Morgan hit 32 sixes in the time frame between September 2014 and September 2015, next to AB de Villiers’ 41. Morgan scored 903 runs, the second best by an English batsman in the given time slot (Joe Root being the top scorer with 945) in 28 matches. The English skipper hit 7 half centuries during this period. He certainly deserved to be in the ICC ODI XI.</p>
<h5><strong>Angelo Mathews:</strong></h5>

<p>The Sri Lankan captain has been in good touch since the time he has taken over the captaincy reigns. Mathews has scored 902 runs in 24 innings that he has played at an average of 47.47 with the highest score of 139* against India in November last year. He has also picked up 20 wickets at an economy rate of 4.90. His all-round performances have been the pillar stone of Sri Lankan cricket in last 14 months.</p>
<h5><strong>Shakib Al Hasan:</strong></h5>

<p>While Mustafizur Rahman created history by being the only Bangladeshi in the ICC ODI XI, another veteran Bangladeshi lost the cut by a close margin. Shakib has picked up 20 wickets at an average of 4.27 in the 20 matches that he has played since September 2014. He has also scored 547 runs at an average just under 40 which makes him such a wonderful all-rounder. He scored a century and 4 half centuries in this phase and also picked up 2 four-wicket hauls.</p>
<h5><strong>Umesh Yadav:</strong></h5>

<p>Indian pace bowler has impressed everyone with his pace bowling. Yadav has taken 35 wickets since last September, which makes him the 5<sup>th</sup> highest wicket taker in this phase. He has taken 35 wickets in just 18 matches at an average of 21.82. He has 3 four-wicket hauls to his name with a best of 4/31. Among Indian bowlers, Yadav has bowled 9 maidens in this phase which is next to only Ashwin’s 11 maidens.</p>
<h5><strong>Dale Steyn:</strong></h5>

<p>The South African pace spearhead missed out on the opportunity to feature in the ICC ODI XI for 2015. Dale Steyn has bowled 13 maidens in ODIs since September 2014, the best by any South African and the second best overall after Boult’s 21. He has picked up 30 wickets in 20 matches with an economy rate of 4.77.</p>
<h5><strong>Tim Southee:</strong></h5>

<p>While pace bowler Trent Boult made it to the ICC ODI XI for 2015, his partner in crime, Tim Southee couldn’t make the edge. However, Southee has a staggering record under his belt too. The fast bowler singlehandedly ripped apart the English batting in the ICC World Cup 2015 with figures of 7/33. Southee picked up 30 wickets in 20 matches since September 2014 at an average of 32.13.</p>
<h5><strong>Steven Finn:</strong></h5>

<p>Steven Finn, the English pace bowler, has had an astonishing last 14 months. He is the third leading wicket taker since September 2014, next to Starc and Boult. However, his performances have not yielded him enough credits as much as he should have got. Finn has taken 2 five-wicket hauls with a best of 5/33 in the 23 matches that he has played. During this time period, Finn has taken 36 wickets, which is quite an achievement!</p>
