Players who have scored a duck in their 100th Test

Many a cricketers have joined the elite 100 Test club, playing 100 Test matches for their country. Reaching the 100 Test mark in one’s career is much more than just a milestone. It signifies the trust the management has put in him to make 100 appearances for the national team. However, in spite of the massive celebration, a 100th Test match can be ruined for a player as well. Scoring a duck on the 100th Test match is one of the worst feelings a player can possibly have. That said, here is a list of players who got out for a duck in their 100th Test. 1. Dilip Vengsarkar: Dilip Vengsarkar, India. (Photo by Bob Thomas/Getty Images) One of India’s finest Test players, Vengsarkar boasted perfect technique and poise. His brilliant performances also saw him become the Indian skipper for a number of years. Vengsarkar played his 100th Test for India at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai which was the 2nd Test on the 24th of November 1988. Playing against a strong New Zealand side, Vengsarkar made 25 in the first innings and 0 in the second. The Indians lost the match by 136 runs. 2. Allan Border: Allan Border, Australia (Photo by Bob Thomas/Getty Images) Allan Border aka ‘Captain Grumpy’ has been renowned for his aggressive captaincy and amazing batting performances. Border, who is the most capped Australian Test player had a rather un-forgettable 100th Test match. The opposition Border faced was a West Indies side at Barbados in April 1991, skippered by Viv Richards. Border scored a duck in the second innings as the Windies won the match by 343 runs. The Aussies ended up losing the series 3-1. 3. Courtney Walsh: Courtney Walsh. (© Touchline Photo/ALLSPORT via Getty Images) Courtney Walsh is perhaps the only one on this list who has won his 100th Test. Walsh played his 100th Test against England at Guyana. He took five wickets in the match but had a rather forgettable time with the bat. He was unbeaten on 3 in the first innings and scored a duck in the second. Windies clinched the win courtesy of a magnificent century in the first innings from Shivnarine Chanderpaul. 4. Mark Taylor: Mark Taylor. (Photo by David Munden/Popperfoto/Getty Images) Former Australian skipper Mark Taylor too has the odd distinction of scoring a duck in his 100th Test match. Taylor’s 100th game came at the Gabba in the first Test of the 1998 Ashes. Skippering the side, he made a crisp 46 in the first innings, ensuring that his side reached a mammoth 485. Fleming, however, was dismissed for a duck in the second when he was clean bowled by Dominic Cork. The match ended in a draw. 5. Stephen Fleming: New Zealand’s Stephen Fleming. (Photo by DEAN TREML/AFP/Getty Images) Despite having an illustrious career, New Zealand skipper Stephen Fleming too has achieved the rare distinction of scoring a 100th Test duck. The now retired Kiwi skipper played his 100th Test against South Africa in the first Test at Supersport Park, Centurion. Incidentally, Shaun Pollock and Jacques Kallis celebrated their 100th Test along with Fleming. The latter, however, scored a duck to ensure a 128-run South African win. 6. Alastair Cook: England’s captain Alastair Cook. (Photo by GLYN KIRK/AFP/Getty Images) England Test skipper Alastair Cook is an unlikely name on this list. Cook played his 100th Test in the 2013 Ashes series down under. Despite scoring a decent 72 in the first innings, he was cleaned up by Ryan Harris in the second innings. The duck in the saw the Brits lose the second Test. The Ashes 2013 is famous for Mitchell Johnson as he tore the English apart, thus securing a 5-0 win and the Ashes. 7. Brendon McCullum: (Photo Source: Getty Images) Brendon McCullum became the latest addition to the list of 100th Test ducks. Playing his 100th Test at the Westpac Oval in Wellington, Brendon McCullum & CO. were put into bat. With the Aussie pace bowlers Josh Hazelwood and Peter Siddle tearing through the batting lineup, McCullum walked in to bat at no.6. He edged a wonderful Hazelwood delivery to David Warner in the slips and walked back without troubling the scorers. All stats updated till 14th February 2016.
