The Christchurch attacks have rocked the global community as terrorism took away over 49 lives in New Zealand, on Friday, March 15. The ides of March was witness to what the New Zealand Prime Minister calls “the darkest day for the country” as multiple white supremacists attacked two mosques at different venues in Christchurch. The touring Bangladesh team was vulnerable to the situation as they were provided with no security.

The scenario has made the President of the Bangladesh Cricket Board, Nazmul Hassan massively upset. He has implied that the fact that the visiting players were given no security at all is totally unfair. New Zealand considered to be the second most peaceful country in the entire world had to face such an unprecedented attack. However, the BCB supremo feels that proper security for touring players should be made mandatory.

Hasan told the media that Australia and England teams were afforded optimum security during their visits to Bangladesh in recent years but in New Zealand, Bangladesh players got no security which could’ve been fatal. As reported by team manager Khaled Mashud, the team was just 50 yards away from where the incident took place. Mashud clearly said that 17 players and support staff who went on a bus to the mosque could easily been caught up in the shooting had they not been delayed.

Nazmul Hassan presses cricketing authorities to heighten security for his players

The Bangladesh team will be leaving New Zealand as the final match of the three-match Test series has been cancelled. The match was scheduled for Saturday, March 16, at the Hagley Oval.

Criticizing the security level for Bangladesh players, the BCB chief said, “When we make tours in countries like Australia and New Zealand we do not get the same level of security that we provide them when they tour Bangladesh. We have always maintained that this kind of incident can happen to any country. Every country has to be careful. Every team has to be alerted.

“It is not that other teams getting security and we are not. Perhaps they [New Zealand authority] thought it was not needed. But things will be changed from now on. Every country must be alert about the situation,” he added.
