Portugal came into the 2018 FIFA World Cup as one of the firm favorites to lift the title. They are placed in Group B along with Spain, Iran, and Morocco. The team has played a couple of matches and are sitting in the second position on the league table. Following their draw versus Spain, they made a stupendous comeback versus Morocco courtesy of Cristiano Ronaldo’s brilliance at the start of the match.
The 33-year old has been a fulcrum of the side and is currently the leading goal-scorer in the event with as many as 4 of them. Meanwhile, he has already presented himself as a strong contender to win the Golden Boot Award. Yesterday, he churned out a superlative header in the fourth minute of the match and strengthened their chances of progressing to the round of 16.
“He knows how to refine his capacity”- Santos
The White Army won the match by 1-0 and coach Fernando Santos was all praises for the stalwart. Meanwhile, he described him in the same manner by which MS Dhoni, the Indian wicket-keeper batsman, had described himself earlier in 2016. Last year, Dhoni played a match-winning hand of 78 runs from 79 balls to set up India’s victory versus the Windies in the third ODI.
Following the victory, Dhoni was asked about the way he was getting better with age. The 36-year had a witty reply in store and he said, “It’s like wine”. The Portuguese coach mentioned the exact thing for Ronaldo. “Cristiano is like a Port wine. He knows how to refine his capacity and age at his best. He is constantly evolving, contradictorily to the other players,” Santos was quoted as saying by Times Now.
“He knows himself and he knows what he can do. What he does now is not what he did three or four years ago, and not what he will be doing in a few years from now,” the 63-year added while hailing the legendary footballer. Portugal’s next match is against Iran on June 25. On the other hand, Dhoni is gearing for India’s limited overs series in Ireland and England respectively.
