Among the numerous victims, former Indian cricketer and renowned batting consultant Pravin Amra was also stuck in the horrible floods in Mumbai yesterday. The city of dreams was flooded due to incessant downpour and the railway transportation system snapped as a result. Millions of Mumbaikars had to forcefully take the roads as a way of reaching their preferred destination, which was flooded till waist height.
Amre, the man behind meteoric rises and grand comebacks of many cricketers like Ajinkya Rahane, Robin Uthappa as well as Shreyas Iyer was in Thane to attend a function. On his way back to his Matunga West apartment, he understood that car is no longer an option of transportation in the water-logged city. Unable to find any other option, he was forced to walk from Sion to Matunga West.
While speaking to Indian Today about the incident, the former Mumbai coach revealed, “I could drive till Chembur without much bother. But after that, the car would simply not move. I searched for a safe parking spot in Sion. And decided to walk the rest of the distance,” he stated.
“The situation was quite bad for the average Mumbaikar. I walked through areas which housed labour camps and Dharavi on my way to Matunga West in knee-deep water. It was quite scary because if there was a pothole, there was no way anyone could spot it,” Ramakant Achrekar ward further added.
Recalling 2005 terror
While the rain stopped on Wednesday, many recalled the tragic 2005 incident. When Amre was asked about it, he replied “I remember I was safe indoors during the 2005 floods. But my Air India colony office was flooded with water levels going up to the first floor. That time, people who knew how to swim had helped the rest.”
