Preity Zinta goofs up while congratulating India for Australia Test series victory
She perhaps did not notice that it was supposed to be a series and not a match.
India secured their first Test series victory in Australia on Monday, winning the four-game series 2-1. The fourth and final Test match in Sydney got drawn as bad weather stalled the game even after the visitors dominated the first four days of the match. Wishes poured in from all quarters for Virat Kohli’s team over its historic win and one among the several high-profile personalities who congratulated the team is Bollywood actor and entrepreneur Preity Zinta. However, she made a blunder while congratulating India.
India won the first Test in Adelaide by 31 runs despite facing a batting debacle on Day 1 morning after their No.3 Cheteshwar Pujara hit a magnificent century to lead a fightback. The century played a crucial role in determining India’s victory in the first match – something they did for the first time on a tour Down Under.
India win Border-Gavaskar Trophy for second consecutive time
Zinta, who also the co-owner of Kings XI Punjab, one of the franchises of the Indian Premier League, took to Twitter to wish India for becoming the first Asian team to beat Australia in their territory in a “test match”. She perhaps did not notice that it was supposed to be a series and not a match. She tweeted a photo of the Indian team celebrating with the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, which they won for the second successive time after the 2-1 victory in the home series in 2017, and gave a special mention of Cheteshwar Pujara, the man of the series with three hundreds in the series. She was trolled by the fans for her mistake. The tweet was deleted later.
Before this win, India’s best performance in a Test series in Australia has been draws and they happened on three occasions – 1980-81, 1985-86 and 2003-04.
India will now take on Australia for three ODIs starting in Sydney on January 12 and after the tour of Australia, India will be heading for New Zealand for five ODIs and three T20Is. The Men in Blue will now be focusing on their preparation for the ICC World Cup scheduled in England and Wales in May-July.
