India’s historic victory in the four-Test series against Australia that concluded on Monday saw praises showering in from all directions. The 2-1 victory saw India becoming the first Asian side to win a Test series on the Australian soil and captain Virat Kohli became the first Indian and Asian captain to win a series Down Under in the longer format. The fourth and final Test in Sydney ended in a draw because of weather conditions despite the visitors dominating it for the first four days.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also tweeted to congratulate the team for winning the series, something they managed to do for the first time since 1947-48 when Lala Amarnath’s side met Donald Bradman’s Australia Down Under. India took the series-winning lead in the Boxing Day Test in Melbourne where they won by 137 runs. Before that, Australia levelled the series in Perth after India won the first Test in Adelaide by 31 runs.

‘Hardly-fought and richly deserved’

In his tweet, Modi wished the Indian cricket team over its “hardly-fought and richly deserved series victory”. It may be mentioned here that another BJP prime minister Atal Behari Vajpayee was in power when India won a Test series in Pakistan in 2004. Sourav Ganguly was the captain on that occasion although his deputy Rahul Dravid stepped in as the skipper for the first two Tests after Ganguly suffered an injury.

Here’s his tweet

Cheteshwar Pujara was picked as the man of the series in the Australia-India Test series with three hundreds, two of which helped India win the match while the third one also took India on the verge of a win. The Indian bowlers also impressed with Jasprit Bumrah finishing as the joint highest wicket-taker with Australian spinner Nathan Lyon with 21 scalps although Bumrah had better figures.

India now get into the limited-over mode with a three-ODI series starting in Sydney on January 12. India next leave for New Zealand to play in five ODIs and three T20Is.
