For teenage batting sensation Prithvi Shaw, India’s recent Australia series turned out into a disappointment of epic proportion. The batsman was all set for his maiden series Down Under but an ankle injury sustained while fielding in a practice game in Sydney saw him getting ruled out of the entire four-match series. India made it a historic occasion by winning the series 2-1 – their first-ever on the Australian soil – but 19-year-old Shaw couldn’t be a part of the proud moment.

Shaw, who made a terrific debut in Test cricket scoring 134 against the Windies in Rajkot last October, averages over 118 in the longer format at the moment. His unfortunate return from Australia gave an opportunity for talented Mayank Agarwal to make an impressive debut and with KL Rahul facing suspension and Murali Vijay completely out of form, Shaw and Agarwal will certainly be India’s new opening pair in the longer format in the series to come.

While fans have been waiting eagerly for Shaw, who is already being compared to Sachin Tendulkar, the Mumbai batsman has come up with a major update on his fitness ahead of the Indian Premier League and World Cup 2019. Shaw though is not part of the India ‘A’ side which will soon take on England Lions in a five-match series, he is expected to be back in action before the IPL in which he plays for Delhi Capitals (formerly Daredevils).

Shaw is currently undergoing fitness training at the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru. “I will be fit before the Indian Premier League and I am trying hard to reach full fitness. I am working on my ankle as well as on my upper body,” he was quoted as saying by India TV.

I am happy that we won

“It was an unfortunate incident and you can’t really do anything about that. It was my wish to play in the challenging conditions in Australia. I love the bounce there. But unfortunately, I suffered a leg injury. But that’s okay, I am very happy that India won the Test series,” Shaw, who scored 66 against Cricket Australia XI in Sydney – the only time he batted in the tour Down Under – added.
