With the conclusion of the Irani Trophy 2019, in which Faiz Fazal led Ranji 2018-19 champions prevailed over Ajinkya Rahane led Rest of India on the basis of the first innings lead and won the title for the second consecutive time, the focus now shifts to the limited overs domestic competition, the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy.
The Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy was instituted in 2008-09 and is named after the batsman who scored India’s first Test century outside India when he smacked 112 at the Old Trafford, Manchester in 1936. Unfortunately, the second World War limited his career to just 11 Tests in which he scored 612 runs.
Mumbai, who was one of the favourites, suffered an early exit last year as they won just one match out of four. To rectify this, the Mumbai Cricket Association has given the responsibility of leading the Mumbai side in the Syed Mushtaq Ali T20 Trophy to Ajinkya Rahane.
Strong squad selected
The Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) announced the 15- member squad on its website after the Ajit Agarkar led senior selection committee, met on Saturday to choose the team. The squad also sees the return of teenager Prithvi Shaw, who has gained full fitness after getting injured during India’s tour to Australia in December last year.
He features in the team which has some known Mumbai stars like Shreyas Iyer, Siddhesh Lad, Surya Kumar Yadav, and former captain and experienced wicketkeeper-batsman Aditya Tare. The bowling attack seems to be in good hands of experienced Dhawal Kulkarni. This bodes well for Mumbai, who couldn’t do much in the Ranji Trophy, but had won the Vijay Hazare Trophy, the domestic One-day tournament, earlier in the season.
Mumbai squad: Ajinkya Rahane (Captain), Prithvi Shaw, Shreyas Iyer, Shardul Thakur, Dhawal Kulkarni, Siddhesh Lad, Aditya Tare, Surya Kumar Yadav, Akash Parkar, Eknath Kerkar, Dhurmil Matkar, Shams Mulani, Shubham Ranjane, Tushar Deshpande and Royston Dias.
