Prithvi Shaw privileged to learn the mental side of game from greats like Ponting and Ganguly in DC
Shaw is currently leading the North Mumbai Panthers in the T20 Mumbai League.
Prithvi Shaw might only be just 19 years old, but he has already been touted as the next big thing in Indian cricket. Shaw, who came into the news for his then record-breaking score of 546 in a Harris Shield match in Mumbai as a teenager, has gone to become of the brightest prospects to take the Indian cricket into the next decade.
Shaw started his first-class career with centuries on debut in Ranji Trophy and Duleep Trophy and emulated the great Sachin Tendulkar in doing so. He then bettered his record, by scoring a century on Test debut as well against Windies in 2018. He recently played for Delhi Capitals in their amazing campaign in IPL 2019, scoring 353 runs in 16 matches with a strike rate of 133.71 with the highest score of 99.
The right-hander got to pick the brains of two of the greatest cricketing minds in the world in head coach Ricky Ponting and advisor Sourav Ganguly and shared his experience of getting to know about the mental aspects of the game from such giants of the game.
Learnt a lot playing under the legends Ricky Sir and Sourav Sir
“Learnt a lot playing under the legends Ricky Sir and Sourav Sir. Having played 15-20 years of international cricket, they have a lot of experience all over the world. It’s not about three-four things we are being taught, it’s more about mentally (being) over there,” Shaw was quoted as saying by Mid-Day.com.
He gave blistering starts to the team but managed just two half-centuries in the tournament and was guilty of throwing away his wicket once he got set. He says that Ganguly and Ponting helped him get over his nervousness of being a youngster and playing IPL with their calming words.

“They won’t talk about technique or anything, it would be match by match…what the plans and strategies are and not about our skills. Obviously, when you are on that stage, you also know things and that’s why you are here. So, they helped us mentally, preparing us to be strong. Being a youngster and playing the IPL, it is a big thing for me. I would be nervous but because of them, they would help me calm down,” the 19-year-old further added.
Shaw, currently, is participating in the T20 Mumbai League and is leading North Mumbai Panthers. He has so far scored 75 runs in two matches which includes a half century in the second match.
