Prithvi Shaw, who made his international debut against Windies in the first Test at Rajkot, has now set his target on making it to India’s 2019 World Cup squad. The 18-year-old Mumbai batsman announced himself in style with a hundred that came faster than a-run-a-ball. Shaw went on to bag the Man of the Series award for his consistency with the bat. He amassed 237 runs in three innings, and also scored the winning runs for his side in the second and final Test at Hyderabad.

It could be fair to say that his heroics against Windies have almost certainly booked him a ticket to Australia for the four-match Test series that gets underway in December. But in the meantime, Shaw has his eyes set on a bigger stage – the World Cup – as he revealed after India’s massive 10-wicket win in Hyderabad.

The Indian selectors took a bold step in dropping both of India’s premier openers Murali Vijay and Shikhar Dhawan for the Windies series. Instead, they decided to side with KL Rahul at the opening slot and also roped in youngsters Prithvi Shaw and Mayank Agarwal. Shaw grabbed the opportunity to represent India in Tests with both hands – his scintillating knock set the tone for India’s resounding victory by an innings and 272 runs over the Windies in the first Test.

Speaking at the post-match presentation, Shaw said, “It was a happy moment for me and finishing the game for India means a lot for me. It is my first series, winning 2-0 and winning the Man of the Series makes it all the more special. Everyone is like a family; there is no senior or junior. It is a great journey and I am looking forward to a lot of it. I don’t know what is happening next, I just want to enjoy this moment.”
