Prithvi Shaw should make a comeback when he's 100% fit: Nikhil Chopra

I do not believe in half-fit players, and you have to be at least 90% fit to play a game, said Azharuddin.

The Delhi Capitals (DC) opening batter Prithvi Shaw was admitted to hospital due to typhoid a few days back. He last featured for the Capitals on May 1 against Lucknow Super Giants (LSG). In nine innings of IPL 2022, he has amassed 259 runs at a strike rate of 159.88. Ahead of DC’s fixture against Punjab Kings (PBKS), the 22-year-old batter was discharged from hospital. In the latest interaction, the former Indian cricketers Mohammad Azharuddin and Nikhil Chopra shared their views on Shaw’s return.

Azharuddin thinks the player needs to be at least 90% fit to feature in any game. He further added that it will not be easy for Shaw to make a comeback, after recovering from a serious disease. The former India captain recalled his County Championship story, where he was denied to feature in a game, as the coach didn’t want him to lose for the entire season. In this regard, Azharuddin reckoned that player knows the best if he is in the best form of fitness.

“I do not believe in half-fit players, and you have to be at least 90% fit to play a game. Coming after typhoid, it’s not easy t0 make a comeback, as the body already has taken its toll. The body needs rest to recover fully. I think even if the doctor or physio can tell you if you are fit, the player knows quite well when is 100% fit, and needs to be true to himself,” said Azharuddin on Sky247.net presents ‘Not Just Cricket’ Show on CricTracker.

Nikhil Chopra suggests DC play Prithvi Shaw after proper practice

Chopra thinks the scorching heat would make it difficult for the batter to recover and feature for DC. He added that if the team plays Shaw without enough practice, they can lose him for the playoffs (subject to qualification) as well. Meanwhile, Sarfaraz Khan has replaced Srikar Bharat in the DC playing XI in the ongoing fixture against PBKS, and Shaw has not featured in the game.

“First of all, with so much heat, it’s not easy for the body. Then if you play him without proper practice sessions, it can do more harm to the team, if any serious injury happens, you will lose him for the playoffs as well. The team is in fine momentum and Shaw should make a comeback if he’s 100% fit,” said Chopra.
