'Probably not what they should be buying' - Mahela Jayawardene's funny take on Kerala people queuing up for alcohol

Mahela Jayawardene is a true ambassador of the game. The right-handed batsman from Sri Lanka has achieved many heights. He is one of the few batsmen to have crossed 10,000 runs in both Tests and ODIs. The Sri Lankan had also led his national team on two occasions. He also led the side to two World Cup finals, 50-overs World cup in 2007 and World T20 final in 2012.

Since his retirement from the game, the veteran has been doing several coaching roles in franchise leagues. He has been the head of Mumbai Indians since 2017 and has helped the franchise in winning two titles, in 2017 and 2019.

The legendary batsman still holds his position and will be the head coach of the Rohit Sharma-led Mumbai Indians in the IPL 2020. Due to the Coronavirus, the IPL has been delayed and there is a sense of emergency in the world. Jayawardene, who is the currently out of action due to the delay in the IPL 2020, has been spotted spending time on social media.

Distance is good, reckons Mahela Jayawardene

On Friday, Mahela Jayawardene posted a funny tweet and also embedded a message for the people. A senior journalist had posted a tweet with an image of people is standing in queue for buying alcohol. The image showed that the buyers were keeping a lot of distance between each other while standing in line.

He pointed out how this is a form of responsible drinking. His post read,” Responsible drinking has a new meaning. Malayalis queuing up to buy alcohol. #COVID2019india #Kerala”

Jayawardene was quick to respond to this tweet. Former Sri Lanka captain pointed out that people should not be buying alcohol but he appreciates the distance. “Probably not what they should be buying but the distance is good” Jayawardene tweeted.

The Mumbai Indians coach has also been signed up by Southern Brave to be the head coach in the Hundred. The 42-year-old will coach the men’s team of the Southampton-based franchise. Other than this, Mahela Jayawardene has also coached Khulna Titans in the Bangladesh Premier League. The veteran was also the batting coach of the England team in 2015 for a while.
