PSL 2018: Teams and their theme songs

The Pakistan Super League (PSL) is underway and is entering into its business end. Six teams are fighting tooth and nail to outclass each other. The tournament commenced in 2015 and has gone through turbulence. Match-fixing scandals, political tensions, and terror attacks have marred the sanctity of the event. However, the extravaganza has weathered the storm and is currently into its third season. Apart from the cricketing technicalities, the tournament has also been a witness to a plethora of theme songs for several franchises as the event has progressed. A number of eminent singers have collaborated to churn out peppy numbers for the sides. In our article, we take through the theme songs of the PSL as well as the six franchises. 1. (Photo by STRINGER/AFP/Getty Images) The official anthem provides a cutting edge to a tournament and also escalates the excitement and buzz surrounding the event. It has been sung by Ali Zafar, an eminent face in the Pakistani music and film fraternity. The song is named as ‘Dil Se Jaan Laga De’ which released a month ago before the commencement of the T20 league. Zafar, who also has a substantial fan-base in India, has also sung the anthems of the erstwhile couple of seasons. The video also features Shahid Afridi, the skipper of the Karachi Kings, Ahmed Shehzad and Rameez Raza who has been a recognized cricket analyst and commentator over the years. 2. Peshawar Zalmi Peshawar Zalmi. (Photo Source: Twitter) The Peshawar Zalmi has displayed some excellent cricket in the current edition of the Pakistan Super League. They have a topsy-turvy stint, however, have managed to string together impressive performances. Darren Sammy has been exemplary as a skipper and has also contributed significantly or the team with both bat and ball. The theme anthem, named ‘Hum Zalmi’ has been sung by Call, a rock band which has Junaid Khan as the lead vocalist and Zulfiqar Jabbar Khan as the guitarist. Leo Twins, a band known for creating music with violin and guitar has also contributed to the video. The video also features Mahira Khan, the brand ambassador of the Zalmi and Hamza Ali Abbasi, a Pakistani actor. 3. Quetta Gladiators Quetta Gladiators. (Photo Source: Twitter) The Quetta Gladiators have been humbled in three games. Before today’s contest against the Karachi Kings, the Sarfraz Ahmed franchise languished at the fifth spot in the league table. However, following their thumping victory against Imad’s Wasim’s team, the Gladiators has escalated to the second position after seven matches. The franchise also has a sprightly anthem which is titled as ‘Zordar XI’. It has been sung by Faakhir Mehmood, a Pakistani singer cum music composer, and Aima Baig, a promising and gorgeous singer in the country’s music industry. Faakhir has also captured the hearts of the Indians with his song ‘Maahi Ve’ in 2005. Aima Baig came into limelight with her song ‘Baanwre’ in last year’s Coke Studio in Pakistan. 4. Karachi Kings Karachi Kings. (Photo Source: Twitter) Karachi Kings have struggled to find their feet in the third season of the Pakistan Super League. The franchise has won three out of their six games out of their six matches and is currently placed precariously at the bottom half of the team. Meanwhile, Shahid Afridi has temporarily been ruled out for ten days owing to a knee injury he sparked during the league. The franchise also has a rocking track named ‘De Dhana Dhan’, which has been sung by Shehzad Roy, a Pakistan singer, social worker, and humanitarian. Meanwhile, Afridi has also lent his voice to the peppy track. The video also features Imad Wasim, the skipper, and fast bowler Mohammed Amir. 5. Multan Sultans Multan Sultans. (Photo Source: Twitter) Multan Sultans are the new entrants in the prestigious tournament. The new franchise hasn’t flattered to deceive and are currently placed at the top of the ladder. The team captained by Shoaib Malik has won four out of their seven games and has the most points (9) thus far in the table. With three matches remaining, they look poised to qualify for the playoffs. The franchise also has an exciting anthem titled ‘Iss vaari, saadi vaari’ the official video of which was released five days ago. They released a teaser of the song on Twitter, a social media platform, after which they made the song public in the first week of February. Junaid Khan, one of their pacers, have featured in the music video. 6. Islamabad United Islamabad United. (Photo Source: Twitter) Islamabad United has been one of the most consistent teams in this edition’s Pakistan Super League. They have performed decently enough under the leadership of the evergreen Misbah-ul-Haq and have six out of four games in the event. The franchise is currently placed in the third position with eight points under their belt. The team haven’t released their theme song for this year thus far. However, they released a song last year named ‘Cricket Joraay United’, sung by the dazzling Momina Mustehsan, an attractive singer in the Pakistan music industry. Momina is also a popular figure in India when her song Nawazishein Karam in the Coke Studio along with Asim Azhar. 7. Lahore Qalandars Lahore Qalandars. (Photo Source: Twitter) Lahore Qalandars have been in abysmal form in the ongoing edition of the Pakistan Super League. They have slumped to defeats in all their games thus far in the event and are currently the cellar dweller in the event. The franchise will be hoping to win their remaining games, salvage pride and end the third season on a positive note. Fawad Rana is a Pakistani businessman and is also the owner of the Qalandars. However, he has also shown his singing prowess lately when he sung the theme song, titled ‘Jiye Jiye Lahore Qalandar’ for the franchise. Meanwhile, the owner would be hoping for his team to string together some impressive performances in their upcoming games.
