In the recently concluded Pakistan Super League 2021, Shahnawaz Dahani ended as the highest wicket-taker in the tournament. He was a key member in the Multan Sultans’ impressive turnaround and helped them clinch their maiden title. At this moment, most of the cricketing spaces in Pakistan are talking about this young fast-bowler. Yet, just a few years back, he was just like any other young Pakistani boy, living in a small village near Larkana.

The lack of proper facilities might have not allowed the young Shahnawaz to get opportunities at a young age, just like many other boys from the city, but he seems to be making up for all the lost time. His story is one for the ages as someone who found it difficult to buy shoes to play cricket and now become one of the most celebrated young players.

Ahead of the sixth edition of the PSL 2021, he was picked up as an emerging player by the Multan Sultans and the decision proved to be every bit worth it. He ended up becoming the first emerging player to become the highest wicket-taker in the tournament’s history. In an interaction with Geo Pakistan, he had talked about his nickname, 3G, which was given to him by his friends in his village.

I am still the same Dahani and will always remain the same: Shahnawaz Dahani

“I was passionate about bowling fast and was known in my village for my fast bowling, that’s why many there had named me 3G bowler – to relate the speed with the speed of the internet,” Dahani had said then. Now, a lot of things have changed for the 22-year-old cricketer who is not just a professional but someone raring to break into the national team. He was recently asked if he has changed with all the things around him changing.

“Absolutely not,” he had responded when Geo asked him last week if his personality has changed after PSL 2021. “I am still the same Dahani and will always remain the same. When I go back to my village, I will be the same for my people, for my friends. I won’t let down the people who’ve always supported me,” he assured.

Talking about the changes in his cricket, the young pacer said, “I’ve managed to eliminate my inner fear. I am now confident and eager to play fearless cricket.”
