Faf du Plessis, the former South Africa skipper, was involved in a nasty incident during Saturday’s Pakistan Super League (PSL) 2021 match at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi. During the game between Quetta Gladiators and Peshawar Zalmi, du Plessis endured a massive collision with teammate Mohammad Hasnain while trying to stop the ball from going to the fence.
In the seventh over of the Zalmi’s innings, David Miller drilled the ball down the ground. Faf, from long-on, tried to stop the ball with his agility. At the same time, Mohammad Hasnain also came running in from the long-off region. Both charged in at full throttle and Faf’s head smashed into Hasnain’s knees after which the former laid on the ground for quite a while.
Faf du Plessis taken to the hospital
Hasnain tried to evade the collision, but he couldn’t. Miller, Faf’s national teammate, looked a tad concerned even as the physio treated du Plessis. Later, the Pretoria-born Faf got back on his feet, much to the relief of the ones around him.
The Gladiators’ management then revealed that he was being taken to the hospital for further scans. However, later he was seen in the dugout with the injury on his neck clearly palpable. Faf’s wife Imari Visser also sounded worried by the occurrence.

Du Plessis went on to suffer a concussion and it was the 19-year-old Saim Ayub, who replaced him. The Gladiators went on to lose the match by 61 runs and they kept languishing at the bottom of the points table with one win from their first seven matches. Ayub scored 35 runs off 31 balls with five fours, but his efforts weren’t enough for the Gladiators to get over the finishing line.
Earlier, Quetta also lost Andre Russell to concussion during the match against Islamabad United. The batter was hit flush on the helmet by a bouncer from Muhammad Musa. If both Faf and Russell miss out on the chunk of the remaining games, the Gladiators are expected to find it tough to qualify for the playoffs. Their next match is against Sohail Akhtar’s Lahore Qalandars on Tuesday.
