PSL spot fixing: Two more cricketers identified in the scandal

The spot fixing scandal which surfaced earlier this year has now identified two more cricketers in connection with the Pakistan Super League (PSL) spot fixing probe. According to reports, the two players include a fast bowler and a middle order batsman. Both the cricketers have featured in the second edition of PSL but were not included in Pakistan’s team that won the ICC Champions Trophy. Their names have not been disclosed yet.

The scandal arose when Pakistani cricketers Khalid Latif and Sharjeel Khan were sent back from Dubai by PCB over alleged links with a syndicate that attempted to corrupt the PSL. Following further investigations, the names of Nasir Jamshed, Mohammad Irfan, Shahazeb Hassan and Mohammad Nawaz also emerged. And the cricketers were summoned by PCB’s anti-corruption unit for investigations.

According to geo.tv, a spokesperson privy to the matter was quoted as saying, “Representative of British National Crime Agency, Andrew Ephgrave mentioned two more Pakistani Cricketers while giving his statement to the tribunal.”

He further added, “The PCB is now gathering more evidence related to this matter and will issue notices to these two cricketers after it has enough evidence in hand. These cricketers have remained part of Pakistan team in past.”

27-year-old former Test batsman Nasir Jamshed received a one-year ban including a six months suspension from the game of cricket. The left-hander was charged with accepting a fixing offer and not reporting it to the PCB’s anti-corruption unit during the PSL.

Irfan and Nawaz were suspended for one year and two months, respectively, after the duo admitted to having breached the Anti-Corruption code by not reporting the corrupt approaches made to them. A fine was also meted out to the fast bowler Mohammad Irfan.

However, the other alleged players have refused to accept the charges and are now pleading their case in the tribunal. The proceeding for the case is likely to conclude by end of the month.
