Cheteshwar Pujara was the hero of the day for the Indian team as he managed to score his 15th Test century, a patient and gritty knock which helped India to take a 27-run lead. At one stage of the game, India were in trouble of conceding a huge lead to the English team but Pujara turned out to be the saviour for his side.
Indian openers failed to create the impact in the Southampton Test as India lost two quick wickets for 50 runs on the board. Pujara and Kohli were expected to stitch a valuable partnership. The duo went on to add a 92-run partnership before Kohli got out to Sam Curran in the first slip. Later Ben Stokes trapped the Indian vice-captain Ajinkya Rahane LBW.
Rishabh Pant was the next batsman who came in. He played 29 dot balls before getting out to Moeen Ali. The English spinner went on to pick Hardik Pandya, Ravi Ashwin and Mohammed Shami in the gap of two overs to keep India in further trouble. Ishant Sharma managed to add few runs on the board before conceding a fifer to Moeen Ali. Pujara was on 96 when Ishant lost his wicket to Moeen.
The No.3 batsman alongside Jasprit Bumrah stitched an invaluable partnership. The former went on to register his century. He added 78 runs for the last two wickets. India managed to take a valuable 27-run lead. Bumrah was the last batsman to get out to Broad in the first slip.
