Last year, the FIFA World Cup 2018 took place and Russia emerged as the winners, defeating Croatia by a margin of 4-2. The next edition of the mega-event is set to take place in 2022 in Qatar from Monday, November 22 to Sunday, December 18. Last year’s tournament generated massive viewership across the globe and it’s not expected to be any different next time around.
In the meantime, an official associated with the FIFA World Cup 2022 has invited members of the victorious Indian teams in the 1983 and 2011 World Cup for the football World Cup. Nasser Al Khater, CEO, FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022, put forth the requests to the players. He was also awestruck by the love and passion for the game of cricket in India.
I extend you a special invitation
“It is safe to say that this world cup (in Qatar in 2022) is for all of us to celebrate. I think I have to say, we look forward to welcoming you there (in Qatar),” Khater was quoted as saying in DNA.
“I did not realise how big cricket was in India, so I know that there are some members from the 1983 World Cup winning team, that beat the West Indies, are here (at the awards function), and there are members from the team that won the(cricket) World Cup in 2011. I extend you a special invitation to come and attend the football world cup in Qatar,” he added.
Back in 1983, India, captained by Kapil Dev, defeated West Indies in the final at the Lord’s Cricket Ground, defying all the odds. It was the first time when the West Indies lost a World Cup final after victories in 1975 and 17979 respectively. 28 years later, the Men in blue lifted the trophy under the leadership of MS Dhoni, beating Sri Lanka in the final at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.
