The annual contracts for the Indian Men and Women cricketers were recently announced by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). While the new pay grade A+ was released for the Men’s cricket team, women cricketers had to deal with the same old three-tier system. A lot of questions have already been raised over this pay disparity from BCCI. However, if a closer look is taken at the annual contracts, top female cricketers are only earning 7% of what their male counterparts do.
As far as the achievements in 2017 are concerned, the Men in Blue reached the finals of the ICC Champions Trophy in England and lost quite badly to their arch-rivals Pakistan in the title clash. Women’s team led by Mithali Raj also made it to the final of the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup defying all the odds and were within touching distance of winning the trophy.
How much is the difference?
While both Men’s and Women’s team played absolutely well in the recently concluded respective South Africa tours, the pay disparity is annual contracts is not going down well with many. If the cricketers among the top brackets are considered, the Indian captain Virat Kohli will earn Rs 7 Crore annually while the skipper and the legend of Indian Women’s team Mithali Raj will get only Rs 50 Lakhs.
Also, the Women players who are in the B and C pay grade, they will also earn Rs 30 lakhs and 10 Lakhs respectively. On the other hand, none of the Men’s pay grade system goes down below Rs 1 Crore. The efforts put by both the teams and players are same in order to win the game for their country and then there is this inequality in the payments. Though the new contracts are awarding much more to the Women cricketers compared to their any of the earlier contracts, they deserve more and very few will disagree with this fact.
