It’s the end of an era as Abraham Benjamin de Villiers, fondly known as AB de Villiers, had bid adieu to all forms of cricket on Friday (November 19). The announcement was nothing short of a bombshell as fans couldn’t digest the fact that the former South African captain won’t show his blitzes over the 22 yards in future.
De Villiers’ last assignment as a professional cricketer was the 2021 edition of the Indian Premier League, where he played a pivotal role in taking Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) to the playoffs. However, his heroics are now a thing of the past as no more run would be added to his already illustrious tally. With De Villiers being arguably the finest batter ever, tributes poured in from different corners.
AB de Villiers – The maverick who ruled hearts of cricket lovers
From former cricketers to current ones and even aspiring talents, numerous showed their respect for the 37-year-old. Speaking of De Villiers announcement, the Proteas talisman took to Twitter and said goodbye to cricket with a heartfelt note. “It has been an incredible journey, but I have decided to retire from all cricket. Ever since the back yard matches with my older brothers, I have played the game with pure enjoyment and unbridled enthusiasm,” wrote the former South African captain alongside sharing a monochromatic picture of his.

Although De Villiers feels the flame has gone dimmer, numbers don’t tell the same story. His average and strike rate in IPL 2021, his last professional assignment, were 31.30 and 148.34 respectively. While any middle-order batter would embrace such numbers, De Villiers reckons he could have done more.
Probably he could have as numbers across formats are ordinary by any means. Be it showcasing resistance in Test matches or scoring runs for fun in white-ball cricket, Mr. 360 embraced every challenge which came his way. Hence, it would be interesting to see if anyone can replicate his heroics over the 22 yards.
