India will regret not winning an ICC trophy in the format they have dominated for the past five years.
The first edition of the World Test Championship (WTC) recently ended with New Zealand becoming the inaugural champions. The Kiwi team registered an 8-wicket victory against India in the final match which stretched till the sixth day. The final was adversely affected with persistent rain that washed out two of the six days completely. New Zealand captain Kane Williamson won the toss earlier and opted to field first.
Indian openers Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill gave the team a decent start. Both of them added 62 runs for the first wicket but were dismissed in quick succession. Cheteshwar Pujara could not make much contribution and went to the pavilion after scoring 8 runs off 54 balls. At the end of day 2, India were pretty solid with a score of 146/3, and captain Virat Kohli batting at the crease alongside his deputy Ajinkya Rahane.
However, on day 3, India collapsed for 217 runs in their first innings giving the Kiwi team an edge in the first innings. Kyle Jamieson did an excellent job in the bowling picking up 5 wickets for 31 runs in his 22 overs. In response to India’s total, the Williamson-led team scored 249 runs in 99.2 over. Devon Conway and Kane Williamson played vital knocks for the side in the first innings helping them gain a lead of 32 runs.
In the second innings, the Indian batters failed again to put up a good show, and the whole team was all-out for 170 runs. Rishabh Pant was the highest run-scorer for the team with 41 runs coming off his bat in 88 balls. Tim Southee picked up 4 wickets for 48 runs in the second innings.
Chasing a modest total of 139 runs in the fourth innings, the Kiwi team looked in control for the most part of their batting. They lost both their openers to Ravi Ashwin by the time score reached 44. However, from there the captain Kane Williamson and veteran Ross Taylor looked composed and returned to the pavilion only after winning the game for the team. Williamson scored 52 runs off 89 balls while Taylor played 47-run knock off 100 balls.
