They might have managed to pluck seven wins in fourteen fixtures, but the Kolkata Knight Riders were like a fishing net with bigger holes than the fishes meant to be caught by it. And quite unsurprisingly, therefore, they kept trying to catch the fishes and kept failing. What ailed them the most this year?
Well, quite a few things. You know that the team is unsettled when a captain steps down midway and throws the hat to someone else. Though many found it ludicrous that despite a World Cup-winning skipper in their ranks, KKR continued with Dinesh Karthik for as long as half the season, but did the switch over pay off? While the primary motive of the shift of roles for Karthik was focusing on his batting, the larger aim was to change the fortunes of the team that was unable to find proper footing.
Unfortunately, the trick did not work. Neither for Karthik nor the team. While Karthik, the skipper, managed to win four out of seven, Eoin Morgan, the much-hyped captain, managed three in as many. Despite giving up the leadership, Karthik, who batted at every position between No., 3, and No. 6, failed to find his rhythm with the bat. The dull form of the million-dollar buy Pat Cummins, of course, did not help KKR’s case.
Add to this an equally misfiring MVP Andre Russell, on whom often relied the hopes of the management, a scratchy and meddled top-order, a pale Kuldeep Yadav, a fluctuating Sunil Narine, and one knows why KKR ended up the way they did. After as many shortcomings, it would have taken exceptional luck for them to make this tournament memorable. However, even luck swayed away from them in the second half of the tournament.
Not all is gloomy in their camp though. Shubman Gill emblazoned his mark with some authority as he finished with 440 runs in the tournament. Furthermore, Varun Chakravarthy, the mystery spinner, found immense success as he finished as the leading wicket-taker of the side. Quite notably, the Riders finished the tournament with 14 points – the same number of points as the teams that finished third and fourth. Although, a negative net run-rate restricted them to fifth place in the tally.
