Ramesh Powar has played a big part in our batting performances: Smriti Mandhana
Youngster Jemimah Rodriguez stated that the coach was quite influential and his way of encouraging them as well as backing their skills has really worked.
Former Indian cricketer Ramesh Powar who took over the position as the head coach of the Indian Women’s team has already been instilling quite a lot of confidence in the team. Powar is expected to continue his coaching duties till the end of the World Twenty20 next month in West Indies.
Indian batting star Smriti Mandhana was absolutely impressed with the way things have been shaping up in the tenure of their new coach. Youngster Jemimah Rodriguez stated that the coach was quite influential and his way of encouraging them as well as backing their skills has really worked. Also, the fact that the team no more misses a bowling coach with Powar in their ranks.
Powar has played a big part in our batting performances
The Indian women went on to register series victories in both ODIs as well as the T20s. They lost just one game on the tour of Sri Lanka. Smriti Mandhana credited coach Ramesh Powar for taking off the pressure from the girls. She stated how Powar encouraged them to instal an attacking mindset which worked in their favour big time.
“It was a mental switch. Technically we have some of best players in the world but mentally somehow we were not able to be as aggressive as needed. And I think here our new coach Ramesh Powar has had a big role to play. Ahead of the T20 series, he told us to go on the attack. Not to go in with any defensive mindset. He played a big part in our batting performances in Sri Lanka,” Mandhana was quoted as saying by India Today.
It’s a blessing to have him
India managed to almost whitewash Sri Lanka with a 4-0 win in the five-match T20I series. Youngster Jemimah Rodriguez went on to lead the batting charts with an aggregate of 191 runs in 4 innings. She remarked how the coach was instrumental in helping her get back confidence.
“Sri Lanka tour was very crucial for me because I was short of runs. Ramesh Sir helped me a lot with a technical improvement as well. And he backed me a lot. He has made a huge impact in terms of mental side of things. He has basically encouraged us to dominate which has helped,” 18-year-old Jemimah said.
Left-arm spinner Ekta Bisht also mentioned the importance of a bowling coach in the team. She feels that it was a real blessing to have someone like Powar in the dressing room. “You can say it’s a blessing for bowlers to have him. Because for a long time we have felt there should be a bowling coach and now our head coach is a top bowler so it really helps.”
