India Women’s cricket is currently going through a rough phase after the team’s defeat in the semi-final of the World T20 against Heather Knight’s England in Antigua by eight wickets. Veteran batsman Mithali Raj was sidelined for the crucial encounter and following India’s drubbing, Annisha Gupta, Raj’s manager lashed out at skipper Harmanpreet Kaur and even termed her as ‘manipulative’.
Thereafter, the 35-year-old Mithali slammed national Coach Ramesh Powar as well as Committee of Administrators (CoA) member Diana Edulji in a scathing letter to the Board of Control for Cricket in India. In the note, the experienced campaigner mentioned that Powar disrespected him continuously and she felt humiliated by the rough treatment dished out to her by the former Indian cricketer.
Powar opens up
The letter was written to BCCI Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Rahul Johri and Saba Karim, the General Manager (GM) of cricketing operations. After all the hullaballoo surrounding the issue, Powar has decided to break his silence and talked about his professional relationship with Mithali. Moreover, he also put forth the reasons why she was dropped from the knock out encounter.
“Ramesh admitted that his professional relationship with Mithali was strained as he always found her aloof and difficult to handle. He maintained that it was due to poor strike rate that she was dropped against England and also because the team management wanted to maintain a winning combination,” a source was quoted as saying in www.republicworld.com.
As far as her performances are concerned, Mithali Raj didn’t flatter to deceive by any means with the bat in hand. She didn’t get an opportunity to bat against New Zealand. However, she scored 56 runs against Pakistan Women and followed it up another useful knock of 51 against Ireland Women at the same venue. She also became the Player of the Match against Ireland.
