With Pakistan’s victory over Australia in the Test series emerged a new champion bowler in their ranks. Though Mohammad Abbas was also the Player of the Series on the tour of England, here he was bowling on unresponsive subcontinent wickets in the UAE. He finished the two-Tests with a total of 17 wickets which included a twin five-wicket haul in the Abu Dhabi Test and was the chief architect of their 373-run victory. He has since been hailed as one of the most promising talents and Ramiz Raja went to the extent of initiating comparisons.
The 28-year-old who made his Test debut against Windies in 2017 has since played 10 matches and has as many as 59 wickets to his name with an unbelievable average of 15.64. He has a certain knack of picking wickets, doesn’t rely on a lot of variations just plays his usual game and sticks to the basics.
After the end of the second Test, he said that the pitch or conditions don’t determine his plan and he just focuses on doing his thing. “Whatever the pitch, my job is to bowl to my strengths. I’ve been man of the series back to back. Wanted to replicate my performances from England. Bowled to my strengths, to the opposition’s weakness,” Abbas said. The right-arm pacer admitted that the key to his bowling was him knowing the limitations and just doing what he is confident with.
Ramiz compares Abbas with Warne
“No one is perfect [talking about himself]. Hit my areas. Didn’t get out of my circle. Thing of great pride for me. Wanted to do this in England too, but couldn’t do so,” he added.
Ramiz who was commentating in the Test match and has closely followed the pace in his young career thus far took to Twitter to express his opinion and said, “It’s still early to compare Abbas with the greats of the game but his set up to out smart opponents is as beguiling as Shane Warnes was!!”
