Day 2 of 6th round for Ranji Trophy 2016/17 was full of sparkling performances. At some places, some teams tightened their grip further more on the second day while some sides staged a strong comeback after a mediocre first day. Vidharbha’s fightback in Eden Gardens was the most inspiring part of Ranji Trophy today.
After being bundled out for just 59 in their first innings and then conceding a lead of 181 runs to Maharashtra on day 1, Vidharbha came back to the game strongly in the first hour. They took Maharashtra’s last 7 wickets for only 72 runs and then raced to a solid 141/1 by the end of the day. They are still 132 runs behind but they would be happy to finally put some pressure on the opposition after a poor first day.
If Maharashtra lost 7/72, then Kerala collapsed to lose their last 8 wickets for a only 41 runs from a score of 301/2. Goa’s Rituraj Singh took 7/42 to bring Goa back in the match but Goa’s batting disappointed them again.
In Mysore, Mumbai dismissed UP for only 225 to seize the first innings lead on a low first innings total of 233. UP though, made sure that game still remains in balance by the end of day’s play as they removed two of Mumbai’s top order batsmen. In Nagpur, Baroda were shot out for 183 on day but did not allow Railways to run away with the game. Still 100 runs behind in the game, Baroda has all their 10 wickets intact and will be relying on their batsmen to finally come good at last.
Talking about running away with the game, Karnataka, Jharkhand and Hyderabad grabbed their opposition tightly by their neck. The game has already come a long way in Vizianagaram. After finishing their first innings in the morning session, Karnataka did not take long to pack up Rajasthan’s first innings for just 148 and then the openers took their lead over 300 by stumps. Jharkhand continued their impressive batting streak. After a double hundred in his previous game, Ishan Kishan struck another hundred today and with a partnership of 206 with Ishank Jaggi (165*), he took Jharkhand’s lead to 181 over a toothless attack of Saurashtra.
In Mumbai, Hyderabad had a magical day. They started the day with hoped of touching 40 but their lower order took them to a colossal total of 580. Overnight batsman Bavanaka Sandeep scored an unbeaten double hundred with support from Chama Milind who struck 136 batting at number 10. Haryana also notched up 502 against Jammu and Kashmir with a superb 194 from Rajat Paliwal while Andhra built a strong lead over Tripura with centuries from Prasanth Kumar and skipper Hanuma Vihari.
